2010 Recruiting Class Impressions

by Jon Jennings 4. February 2010 15:40

Devin Gardner:  A great prospect who is the middle man between Tate and Denard in terms of both passing and running ability.  What separates him from the two is his 6’4” 215 pound frame.

Cullen Christian:  A tall lengthy defender who has extremely long arms and a great burst out of his back pedal.  Cullen is not afraid to get physical as he brings nice size to the secondary.White - Signing Day

Josh Furman:  Very tall prospect at 6’3” who has a frame to hold up to 220 pounds.  Furman’s athletic ability and size makes him a great candidate to play the spinner position at U-M.

Austin White:  A running back with very nice size.  White has great vision and has the ability to cut on a dime.  He can run around you or run through you thanks to his combination of size and speed.

Jibreel Black:  Black is a motor player.  He never gives up on a play.  When he stays low Black as the ability to be unblockable and dominate the line of scrimmage.  Very quick out of his stance.

Marvin Robinson:  The most physical mature player in the 2010 class.  Robinson’s size and speed allows the coaches to try him at different positions.  Has the speed and ball skills to play safety but has the frame and bulk to play OLB early in his career.

Miller - Signing DayDemar Dorsey:  A very tall 6’1” but a thin 180 pounds, Dorsey has the speed and ball skills to be a dominate safety.  He also displays very long arms and has the ability to break up or intercept passes at their highest point.  Also an explosive athlete with the ball in his hands.

Ricardo Miller:  A b ig physical wide receiver, Miller has great hands and runs nice routes.  The best blocking wide receiver in the group Miller.  His size and blocking ability may allow him to see playing time early in his career.

Jerald Robinson:  A very athletic wide receiver Robinson displays great hands and route running ability.  Can stretch the field with his speed.

Pace - Signing DayWill Hagerup:  Displays a very big leg but will need to work on his placement of his punts.  Hagerup also has nice size just in case he is put in position to make a tackle.

Christian Pace:  Not a  very big offensive linemen but Pace has natural leverage in run blocking situations.  Very athletic offensive linemen Pace should have no problem getting on blocks in the second and even third levels.

Courtney Avery:  Very nice back pedal and has very smooth hips.  Avery is not the biggest player but he plays much bigger than his size.  Very smart prospect who has a great ability to anticipate routes.

Terry Talbott:  Displays nice size and athletic ability.  Talbott will have a chance to play early due to his quickness off the ball and overall speed.

Stephen Hopkins:  Has the size to bulldoze through the line of scrimmage but when in the open field he displays unexpected speed.  A very tough runner Hopkins rarely goes down on first contact.

Richard Ash:  Another very athletic defensive lineman. Ash has a knack for cutting into gaps and getting into the backfield in a hurry.

On playing against Denard Robinson in 2008: “Playing against my cousin (former Deerfield Beach star quarterback Denard Robinson). We beat him during the regular season and I intercepted him twice during the playoff game-- and scored both times.”

On his visit to U of M: “It was great taking the trip to Michigan. I learned a lot of new things about the academics, and about the program. I met a couple players, coaches, and their wives and kids. Went to Rich Rodriguez’s house, and hung out and played video games. We were at the basketball game, too, that was fun. We all ran on the court after they won, which was fun.”

Demar Dorsey vs. Rashad Knight vs. Sean Parker

by Lance Callihan 2. February 2010 06:25

Which (known) remaining “big time” recruiting target do you want to commit to U of M & why?  RichRichRod7 Rodriguez has said Michigan can sign anywhere from 26-28 recruits according to recent accounts.   The general consensus is that Rodriguez could make space for two of the three.  But which one or two would you like to have?

Recruiting Profiles w/Highlight Videos:

Demar DorseyRashad KnightSean Parker

To weigh in with your opinion, jump into the conversation right now in the Recruiting Forum

My Opinion:

“After watching the highlights of all three I would have to say my favorite player is Sean Parker.  He shows a natural knack for the game of football and seems to play a second or two faster than his competition.  Rashad Knight would also be a great addition to the class with his big-hit ability, but the fact he has drawn his recruitment out for so long makes me a little leery.  Most thought he would have named U of M long ago.  Demar Dorsey is extremely athletic with his speed being evident on film.  The only thing I believe we have going for us is the fact he is Denard’s cousin and I believe he will commit to Florida State.  That said, if he says ‘Michigan’ tomorrow instead, it will go down as a sterling example of Rich Rodriguez’s ability to seal the deal (close) with recruits.”

Demar Dorsey Recruiting Update

by Jon Jennings 28. January 2010 12:42

The recruitment of Lauderdale Lakes Boyd Anderson safety Demar Dorsey has taken a few turns since his visit to Ann Arbor two weeks ago.  Last weekend the four star prospect visited Florida State and rumors started swirling around about a possible commitment.  Since then it was confirmed that Dorsey did not commit and would be picking between USC, Florida, Florida State and Michigan.  Before his visit to Tallahassee Florida let Dorsey know that if he did indeed go on his last remaining visits Florida would pull his scholarship.  Many thought it was a bluff but recently it has been confirmed and reported that Dorsey no longer held a scholarship to attend the University of Florida after he got home from Tallahassee.

With the Gators out of the picture and now down to a final three Coach Rodriguez will be in the house of Demar Dorsey at some point today.  Don't expect any big news until after his visit with the Trojans however Coach Rodriguez has proved over and over again that he is one of the best closers in the business.  Dorsey likes the Seminoles because it is an instate school while Michigan has immediate playing time, a family atmosphere with his cousin Denard Robinson and many fellow Floridians on the squad as well as 110,000 every Saturday!  Stay tuned as it is expected he'll announce sometime on signing day!

One Week Until Signing Day…

by Todd Male 27. January 2010 20:45

Well here we are, a week away from the greatest day in the college football off-season. National Letter of Intent day. It turns fans into fanatics. I get more questions about recruiting than pretty much anything else. Combined. Ken Wilkins - Scout

I remember years past listening to WTKA most of the day, waiting with baited breath to hear who was coming, who changed their mind last minute and became Blue, and who turned Benedict Arnold on Big M.

In the days of Bo and Woody, recruiting was important. But the 85 scholarship restriction has made it mission critical. With basically 15-25 recruits coming in each year, the margin for error has diminished to a point where its non existent. If 4 players per recruiting class don't pan out at all, you're looking at a scenario where its tough to stock the 2 deep with respectable talent (See 2009 M Defense, although other factors were involved).

This class is looking like its going to shape up quite well. Two things stand out to me, providing the list of verbal commitments end up signing their LOI's. One, this class is very very athletic. Speed and versatility can be used to describe most all of these recruits. Two, several positions of need on defense appear to be filled. Only thing at this point I wish was in this class is a stud to eventually replace Will Campbell, but as long as its addressed next year it should be ok.

Be sure to follow @umgoblog on twitter and tune in next Wednesday. We'll be tweeting as much of the breaking news, and reassuring you when the letters fax in as soon as possible. And I'm sure there will be a twist here and there to surprise us all!

QUOTES

On his visit to U of M (12/9):It was a good visit, I would call it my best visit so far," Parker said. "All the visits are similar in a lot of ways with the campus tours and meeting the academic people. This was my visit where I didn't see a football game since the season is over but we did see a basketball game for a half and that was cool … Overall, I loved the facilities and they have great academics at Michigan as well. It can get cold but it's not a big deal for me, it's nothing I can't overcome. I like Coach (Rich) Rodriguez and I like the opportunity to play early as well so Michigan definitely has a lot of pluses for me.”

ANALYSIS

Barry Every, Rivals: “Could play a role on special teams as a freshman but will most likely redshirt while he gains needed muscle mass and strength. Parker projects as a two- to three-year starter that will overachieve and make a name for himself.”

Scouts, Inc: “Parker is an exceptional athlete that can play a multiple number of positions. He is especially impressive as a safety and return specialist. Even though he lacks ideal size, he is extremely active and is a big play maker both sides of the football and on special teams.…Parker is an instinctive football player that plays the game with a passion. He rarely comes off the field and should play early at the next level.”

Tom Lemming, MaxPreps: “A physical ball hawk who on film is a high energy FS … He's intense, tough, and a ball player who loves to play the game. Shows great hand/eye coordination, instincts, and range. A difference maker at the FS position, he's effective in zone and man to man coverage. A good athlete with a big heart who consistently makes plays on the ball and breaks up passes. He could be an instant starter next year in college.”
