Bruce Hooley, Fox Sports Ohio, has covered the conference’s sports teams for 23 years at The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, ESPN.com, FOXSports.com and WBNS-FM in Columbus.
The following is a summary of what he said in an interview on The Really Big Show in Cleveland yesterday:
Kalis can’t be blamed for decision he made, brought back some starch in the rivalry.
Only fans that will rip on Kalis are delusional, he made the right decision.
Michigan is a great academic school with a great offensive coach in Al Borges and a proven head coach in Brady Hoke.
I started the Cleveland Plains Dealer and Michigan used to win recruiting battles in Ohio, I still remember Pierre Woods picking to go to Ann Arbor. Cleveland used to be open for business, then all of a sudden, players starting going to OSU.
Rich Rodriguez got 11 guys out of OH, but he wasn’t really competing with Ohio State. He recruited players they didn’t want anyway.
Mike Vrabel isn’t what Luke Fickell needs as an assistant. He needed a coach with head coaching experience and should have pursued former Minnesota head coach Glen Mason to help out on the offensive line.
Ohio State has taken the minimalist approach in regard to penalizing themselves and they will pay for it.
OSU is clearly an institution that has been steered by public perception, their entire handling of the Tressel situation proves this. Is in complete denial, claim they shouldn’t be handled as a second offender with the NCAA although they cheated in basketball and football.
What ever happened to Jim Tressel paying his 250K fine? Then they go out and pay him his June salary of 50K. I don’t know how they could be worse at crisis management then they are.
The sad fact of the situation is that a large portion of the Ohio State fan base still think Jim Tressel didn’t do anything wrong. They’ll swallow anything the Buckeye administration will feed them. They are totally out of touch with reality and there is no way you can get them back. Ohio State fans are the height of arrogance, you would think they’ve won more than one national championship since 1968, and to top it off that title should have been vacated anyways.
The way Chris Spielman and Kirk Herbstreit are vilified for saying the facts is disgusting. Anyone who dares their love for Ohio State are plain wrong.

I don’t think this “destroys” Ohio State; it’s just truth. Sure there are some vocal Buckeye fans who still believe the Tressel myth. Not all, especially not me. As soon as I heard that Tressel knew and covered up the facts, it was time to go. I wrote this way back in March and it’s still relevant (and funny too) in my opinion. I loaded up your article Joe and I already read it a few months back. It was good then and it still is. I believe someone linked to it in the forum. As far as the Tressel myth goes, he got what he deserved in the end game. Fans tweeted at us that Hooley was Drew Sharp/Michael Cole and I have to disagree, all of the points he makes are reasonable, a word that Buckeyes fans cringe to hear. Go Blue!
I think in context of the article blasts would have been a better word to use. All in all Hooley sounds extremely reasonable.
Agreed, I’m the first to admit that titles in my articles are my downfall.
Poor Hooley. How dare he speak the truth. They’ll try to chase him out of Ohio next. There is a reason they call them buck “nuts”.
Totally Agree! Go Blue!
