Rich Rodriguez: “I’m very excited as is every coach in America is today with the new members of their football programs. I thought our staff did an outstanding job developing relationships and signing some guys that will be great fits for our program and I think we can help them have great careers on and off the field.”
“Players often make decisions based on where they feel comfortable and I feel the need to thank the community
members who welcomed them on their recruiting trips.”
“Devin Gardner will be participating in workouts starting in the next two days. He is extremely competitive and has a lot of skills … We recruit multiple players at the same position because we want guys that want to compete.”
“Stephen Hopkins is a big back out of Texas and has good skills. Some situations we want one big back in the backfield and I believe Stephen can fill that role for us.”
“Jeremy Jackson’s primary recruiter was Fred Jackson, surprise there
(chuckles). He stands on his own merits and is a good football player and a great fit for our offense. He is a big strong receiver that can go down the field and get the ball.”
“Ricardo Miller is another big receiver, moved up here a year ago with his family from the Orlando area. He has a great personality and always has a smile on his face. This guy is very competitive.”
“We had a need at Center and Guard and Christian Pace enrolled here early. Came from a big school in Ohio, Avon Lake. Will be playing Guard and Center for us in the future.”
“Jerald Robinson also committed to us early. Is a big receiver like Jeremy and Ricardo. Has great ball skills and is an outstanding athlete. Could also play some safety for us.”
“Austin White (pictured right) has had an outstanding high school career. In camp, he wanted to take every rep and was always jumping in front of the line wanting to prove himself. I’m very excited about him, he has all the skills we need from a RB.”
“Richard Ash was critical for us in the recruiting process. I think he felt comfortable from the start up here. We had to battle with him still even up to this morning. Comes from an outstanding high school program.”
“Courtney Avery is a defensive back that played quarterback on offense and also scored 1,000 points in basketball. We noticed him a year ago and tracked him and had an even better senior year. We are going to try him at corner first, but he has the ability to help us out at many positions.”
“Jibreel Black is a defensive lineman from Wyoming, OH. Jibreel was one of the top guys on our
board for the defensive line and has a great motor. We are excited to have him in our program.”
“Cullen Christian is a defensive back. He is very coachable. We tell guys we don’t recruit anyone to be back-ups. I’m very excited about the guys we recruiting in the secondary and Cullen is one of those guys.”
“Drew Dileo is an outstanding athlete that has the ability to return punts and had an great senior year. I love that he came back and had a great senior year even after he committed to us.”
“Demar Dorsey was committed to another school for a long time. After some coaching changes, he opened up his recruitment. Calvin Magee and Denard Robinson were the top recruiters on Demar. Denard claims he is 100% on guys he has
recruited. Demar will probably start out at corner and eventually move back to safety.”
“Josh Furman is an athlete. He had a great senior year running the football. We need him to fill one of our needs at outside linebacker.”
“Zoltan Mesko will be sorely missed by this program. We believe Will Hagerup can fill our need and he’s a big guy that succeed at this level and understands he had a chance not to redshirt and play right away.”
“Carvin Johnson at safety. Led his team, very intelligent, tough physical guy.”
“Conelius Jones is an athlete from Spartenburg High School. He can throw the ball and run. We need QB’s that can compete and are willing to play where we need them.”
“Antonio Kinard is a LB from the same school that we got Isaiah Bell and Fitzgerald Toussaint. He is another great athlete that has a chance to make some noise at this
level. He has some work to do academically and we will help him out if he doesn’t make the grade.”
“Paskorz has a brother at Notre Dame. I actually met the family recruiting Steve a few years ago. He will wind up being 255, 260 lbs and fills a position of need. Will help us replace a great Michigan Wolverine Brandon Graham.”
“Marvin Robinson is friends with Ricardo Miller and Ricardo did a great job recruiting for us. He is a safety with great size and speed.”
“Davion Rogers is from Warren Harding High School. Burgess, Manningham, Diggs also cam from there. He is a big tall linebacker that we think can fill out and also is athletic.”
“Jake Ryan grew 2-3 inches his senior year and had a great year. We as a program need to keep offers open for players that have great senior years. We are excited to have them in the program.”
“Terrance is the corner. Terry is the lineman. Obviously Terry grabbed the food at the dinner table before Terrance. We were sold on them on their tape, but when they came to camp it further
solidified our belief they could fit in at our program.”
“Ray Vinopal is a safety from Youngstown, OH. He had a great senior year and was a leader on his team. He was smart and tough and did everything for his team. We believe he is a under-the-radar player and is as valuable recruit as the rest we signed. Don’t get caught up in stars.”
“Kenny Wilkins is athletic enough to play linebacker or end. Kenny has a big motor and is a great young man that has the ability to contribute.”
“D.J. Williamson is a fast receiver that has been committed to us for awhile and has the ability to play inside or outside receiver.”
“The seven that enrolled early have been working out and going to classes, except Devin.”
Impact on Defense By This Class: “There may be some guys on offense we switch to defense this spring to balance out the team. We needed players at every position on the defensive side of the ball. You can never have to many defensive lineman. We needed linebackers that could play in space and defend the spread. Our linebackers and corners and safeties are guys we believe can play in space and I believe there will be immediate competition on the defensive side of the ball.”
On the Hiring of a New Defensive Coach: “I will be looking for a Safety/OLB Coach more so than a LB position. We’re going to put Greg Robinson at LB’s and I will pickup the pace now that this recruiting season has come to a close.”
Harder to Recruit after a Bad Season: “Didn’t really see the negative recruiting you would expect. If anything, it gave us the ability to offer opportunity. Only one program in the Big Ten we saw negative recruiting from.”
On Demar Dorsey’s
Arrests: “Every guy we sign, we did our research on. I don’t think its fair to pass judgments on people without knowing the entire story. We went to his school, met his family and learned the entire story. We believe every guy we sign is a great fit not only for this program but for the community .. Generally our guys behave pretty well .. We have our incoming recruits spend time with out players to get a better feel if these guys will be good fits for this university.”
“If you look at everything that happened and the results and find out the whole story.”
(Drew Sharp, Dave Birkett & Mark Snyder are attacked RR relentlessly about this.)
On Recruiting all the way up to this morning: “Not as many as you used to have to go after. There used to be up to ten guys we’d have to sign on recruiting day, now there’s only two or three. Most of the time you already know, but there’s a few surprises here and then.
Effects of Carroll and Kiffin: “Big effect .. One of the major factors in recruiting is developing relationships. Factors are with the school and the coaching staff. When coaches leave, players ask whether they will still be comfortable at the school anymore.”
Did Possible NCAA Violations Effect Recruiting: “Not really at all.”
How did you find out about Negative Recruiting: “The recruits tell us and so do their parents. I just don’t believe in it. Why not spend the time selling your own school. I’m not going to cry about it, its part of the game …. As a whole the conference is very classy in recruiting. It wasn’t Jim at Ohio State.”
Which school was Negative Recruiting From the Big Ten: “I’m not gonna say (laughing).”
On Defensive Backs: “It was a definite need and we probably doubled our scholarship numbers just with this class.”
On Star Ratings: “I don’t care what the fans think. I’ve seen them in person and on the tape. Sometimes I see a four star, five star player and I just don’t see it. Other times I see two star, three star players and think they should be higher. In general, I appreciate the jobs that Scout and Rivals do because they raise the profiles and visibility of young men.”
On Demar Dorsey’s Recruitment: “Demar was one of three or four guys we weren’t sure of until this morning. Until they sign the LOI this morning we are not sure.”
On this year’s class: “We’re pretty full right now, we could maybe make space for one more if we had too, but I’m pretty sure we’re done right now.”
Emphasis on Athleticism: “We’re no different than anywhere else. We needed to get faster on defense and more competitive. So when a guy goes down with an injury another guy can step in and fill that spot and not have a drop-off. Speed is something that is irreplaceable.”
Offensive Lineman Numbers: “We will recruit more next year, I didn’t see it as that big of a need this year.”
