Maynard Morrison played for the Wolverines and proudly donned the #57 from 1929 to 1931. Head Coach
Harry Kipke said or Morrison’s play at linebacker, “No one ever got past him.”
After his first season in 1929, Kipke said Morrison was the best back to wear a Michigan uniform in the last 15 years of Michigan Football. He spent most of this season as a fullback but transitioned to tackle midway through the season.
In 1930, Kipke wanted to move Morrison to the center position on both sides of the ball. To successfully do so he had to convince Morrison’s father of the move. Kipke was successful and after ten days in spring practice Morrison was comfortable with the move. The AP was quoted as saying that Kipke was a “defensive genius” for his work in 1930.
In 1931, Michigan went 8-1-1 and tied for the Big Ten Conference Championship. Kipke was named a First Team All American. In 1982, Maynard Morrison was inducted into the University of Michigan Hall of Honor.
