This week we profile Marty Turco. “MAR-TY TUR-CO.” I can still remember my first U of M hockey game and all of the different chants the student section would sing. To say the least, the one I picked up on the fastest was the simplest one, “MAR-TY TUR-CO.” Turco led the Maize ‘n Blue to national championships in ‘96 and ‘98 and set the all-time NCAA wins record at 127.

The U of M Hockey program leads all the entire NCAA in national championships, but the title in ‘96 was the Wolverine’s first since 1964. Turco on winning the title in ‘96, “To see Brendan (Morrison) put that puck in the net in overtime was something I’ll never forget … To be part of that — to bring the winning tradition back to Michigan — is something I’ll always be proud of.” Marty Turco went on to have his own bobblehead night in 2004.
Just how good was Marty Turco during his tenure in net for the Wolverines? Check out these three saves he made in the Frozen Four in 1998.
Marty now plays for the Dallas Stars of the NHL and he is a spokesperson for the Stars Stick With Reading program. Because of his stick-handling ability, Don Cherry has called Turco, “The smartest goalie in the NHL.”
UMGoBlue recognizes Turco as a Wolverine Immortal. “MAR-TY TUR-CO!”
