Hate to say it, but this was a horrendous call and a really bad way for U of M to win.  Huge Michigan fan, but this was very unfortunate.

Yeah, it was obvious even during the game that they called it wrong on the field. I think Michigan's D still would have stopped Indiana eventually, because they seem to tighten up most when we really, really need it. But Michigan got outplayed on both sides of the ball...Indiana really should have won. We are going to need a LOT better from them against Sparty.

@Conrad These pictures clearly show that Warren had possession of the ball.  How can you call this a horrendous call?  He had two hands on the ball and Belcher had an arm on the ball.  Warren clearly had possession as they went to the ground.

Granted I don't like that they essentially won the game based on this call, but it was the correct call and these photos show that.

I hate winning on an iffy call, but there's no way you can give this ball to the receiver.  I remember feeling a little guilty when Braylon Edwards threw a catch to the turf in the home openner against Washington and the refs called it a fumble, when it was obviously an incomplete pass.  These pictures however, clearly show that Warren has an advantage in possession before the receiver's knee hits the ground.  If this happened in the endzone, there might be a debate about the call, as it looks like the player caught to the ball, he just failed to maintain possession on his way to the ground.  When the Indiana player's knee hits the ground, he has already lost his claim to joint possession.  If the refs give the catch to Indiana, myself and 99.9% of Wolverine fans would still be  pissed off.

Warren made a great play and just because it was close doesn't mean it was iffy.  There's no way any referee could call this the other way.

The problem with these pictures are THEY WERE NOT AVAILABLE TO REFS MAKING THE CALL.  If you go strickly by the video evidence that was shown, it was a simultanious catch and should have been awarded to the offense.

A MUCH bigger question is how is Tate?  According to the images we saw of him favoring his injured wing (after running down the field perfectly OK for 25+ yards), and the unbearable pain shown when a teammate lightly touched his shoulder, I'd guess he might be out for weeks....similar to Bradford.  Is he OK?????????

EXCEPT that the ref who made the ruling on the field (interception) did have pretty much exactly this view. At about the time the ball arrives, the umpire is standing on the left hash looking right at Warren and Belcher's fronts. He likely saw something very similar to that first picture above.

Then, looking at the replay does not indicate shared possession and even if it did, it's nowhere close to conclusive. You can clearly see the ball on the outside of Belcher's arm. At BEST, he has "caught" it between his arm and forearm. At no point is there ANY conclusive evidence that Belcher had a hand on the ball at any point before Warren's knee touches the ground. The way the play developed, you'd EXPECT that they had shared possession, but there's no video proof that they did, and that's one of the main reasons you won't see any Indian fans putting up video evidence of this play.

I was at a wedding for most of this game, but I managed to catch the tail end and thought this was a gift for Michigan. Given all of the evidence we have now, this is just a case of the refs making a spectacular and difficult call which also happened to be dead on.

Wow, bizarre explanation here.

"At BEST, he has "caught" it between his arm and forearm."

That's posession.  As a matter of fact, he can posess the ball between his helmet and his ass if he wants and it doesn't change the dual posession.

"this is just a case of the refs making a spectacular and difficult call"  99.999% of the world disagrees with you and the refs after seeing these pictures and the film.

That's NOT possession. "A player gains possession when he secures the ball firmly by holding or controlling it while contacting the ground inbounds." Does Belcher secure this ball firmly by holding or controlling it? You put a football in your elbow joint and try to keep me from grabbing it and this will tell you just how firm your hold of the ball is.

It wouldn't matter if 174.28% of people disagreed with me; the rule book agrees with me.

Dan, Word out of yesterday's press conference is that Rich Rodriguez said Tate Forcier has a sore shoulder and will practice sparingly until Thursday; will play on Saturday.

The real problem is the NCAA and its stupid dual-possession rule. Could this also not be ruled as a catch and a fumble-strip? Kind of like how Denard had the ball ripped out of his hands when he was going down. The NCAA should fix this dumb rule.
