Defensive Impact Leaders

Football is often a game that comes down to one or two plays or even a mental mistake.  I have tracked every play in every game this season searching for the intangible plays that make all the difference in a close game.  Examples of negative plays I charted were missed blocks, blown assignments, mis-reads, being driven out of the play or simply showing poor tackling form.  Examples of positive plays would be the shedding of a block, beating a double team, staying in a proper lane or getting a hand in the QB’s face.  Ideally a great game by a player would result in no negative plays and a few positive plays.  On most plays there isn’t a mis-read or an extraordinary effort by a player.  Keep in mind that a negative play in the future could result in a QB being blindsided or a simple toss play turning into a 80 yard touchdown.  Players start out with a 5, or an average game, and are charted up or down based on their performance.

By looking at these statistics I am pretty impressed with the performance of TF Craig Roh.  He is even starting to draw numerous double-teams (see Indiana game).  With that said, when do you think they will give Justin Turner a shot at defending the side opposite Donovan Warren.  JT Floyd looked alright at best and, well, we have all seen how much Cissoko can be exploited.  It seems to me that he often gets lost in coverage without the help of a safety.  Even looking at some of his high school tape at Cass Tech...he really can't be left alone on an island.  Let's face it, regardless of athleticism, some guys just aren't able to anticipate well enough to be left alone in coverage.  Maybe he needs to spend more time in the film room.

I'm not sure Justin Turner will get a shot opposite Donovan Warren anytime soon.  At practice he has not been in the rotation with the first team defense and as Greg (MVictors.com) noted Turner wasn't with the first team defense on the sidelines, so it didn't look like there was any chance he would go in.  Surprisingly, the 4th CB right now would be Teric Jones by all accounts.

Nothing against Boubacar, but athleticism in a CB is better served in a Cover-2 Scheme while Size is needed when left on an island due to the increased jump balls thrown at them.
