Final 2013 B1G Recruiting Rankings

Note: As usual we include Notre Dame in B1G Rankings as they recruit same area and are a common opponent.

1. Ohio

Biggest Get – Jalin Marshall (ATH-WR). MarshaJalin Marshallll is a special, explosive athlete who will thrive in Urban Meyer’s offense.

Biggest Miss – James Quick (WR). Quick is one of the most explosive receivers in the country and ended up choosing the hometown Louisville Cardinals over the Bucks.

Sleeper – Jayme Thompson (S). It’s hard to call a borderline 4 star kid a sleeper, but in a class full of highly rated DB’s Thompson is exactly that. While a bit raw, his athleticism makes his ceiling very high.

2. Michigan

Biggest Get – Shane Morris (QB). Any time you can get a five star talent at quarterback you are doing very well. Morris has the biggest arm in the country and was an exceptional recruiter for Michigan.

Biggest Miss – Laquon Treadwell (WR). During the summer it seemed as if Treadwell was a near certainty to commit to Michigan, but in the end he chose to go elsewhere. Treadwell would’ve filled a pretty big need.

Sleeper – Channing Stribling (CB). A virtual unknown, Stribling came to Michigan’s camp this summer and completely shut down the competition over a five day period and earned an offer.

3. Notre Dame

Michigan Football New Year Recruiting Update

With signing day just around the corner, here is a look of where things are at. Michigan currently has 24 commits in its 2013 class and could potentially goShane Morris as high as 29. As we’ve seen with Hoke and Company over the past two recruiting cycles, more recruits can pop up at any time. So this list is quite fluid.

Quarterback (Shane Morris)

More on the way? Highly unlikely. Personally, I’d love for the staff to go after another QB for this class just because depth could be a huge concern next season if Devin were to get injured. Russell Bellomy showed that he is not quite ready for the prime time quite yet against Nebraska. He’d have to improve a lot over spring and fall ball to prove otherwise. The only option after him is Mr.. Morris, but without a solid running game throwing him out there seems like a bad idea. With Shane already in the fold you’re not going to get another high profile kid, but adding a mid-tier 3 star kid would be a smart idea. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like adding another QB in this class is going to happen.

Running Back (DeVeon Smith, Wyatt Shallman)

More on the way? Likely. An already really nice running back class could be much better with the addition of 5* Derrick Green. With messes at both Tennessee and Auburn, Michigan seems to be the obvious choice (he even named Michigan his leader a few weeks back), but Green has yet to pull the trigger. Barring a decision at the Army All-American Game, this recruitment will likely draw out until signing day or somewhere near there. I think there is a very good chance that Green ends up in this class, but wouldn’t be shocked if he chose somewhere else. Shallman may very well end up on the defensive side of the ball, but I left him on the running back’s list for now.

Wide Receiver (Jaron Dukes, Da’Mario Jones, Csont’e York)

Impressions from Rivals 5-Star Camp

My initial thoughts and impressions after watching extensive video from the Rivals 5-Star Challenge Camp:

David Dawson – kid is going to be a good one. Very, very good. He is quick with very, very good feet. He still needs to get stronger David Dawson, Freepas guys were successful bull rushing him. However he looked great.

Chris Fox – he is opposite of Dawson. Very strong at the point of the attack but not very athletic. He let guys get around him to easily. However, likely #1 overall player in the 2014 class DeShawn Hand tried to bull rush Fox…didn’t work. Fox stood him up and it was game over. Fox is starting to look more and more like a guard IMO, allowing Kyle Kalis or Kyle Bosch to slide outside in a few years. BTW, Dawson is a sure fire guard with the ability to play center.

What I have seen on Jourdan Lewis …first of all, if you’re running 1 on 1’s with WR/CB’s, play tight man to man, don’t make the corner give a 10 yards. However, his back pedal is QUICK and SMOOTH. He has great hips and closing speed. He has Cissoko’s feet and T-Rich’s acceleration. This kid is going to be a good one. However, he does need to put on some weight.

Mike McCray – heard he checked in at 6’1", so not as tall as expected. He is a bigger linebacker so people thought his coverage skills would lack, however he did well in 1 on 1’s. Again, this is a VERY unfair drill, but he held his own and actually showed some nice fluid hips. Not a ton of film out there from this event on him. He could probably use a year to lean up as it looked like he may have had 10-15 pounds of bad weight on him.

Malik McDowell – He has work to do in the weight room. His bull rush is completely non-effective. However, he does understand how to use his hands. He also had a pretty nice spin move but relies on it too much. He really, really needs to get in the weight room and turn his 6’6" frame into something scary. He has all of the athletic talent in the world, just needs to add the strength. 5 star kid? Not yet IMO
