Nebraska Game Prediction

Anyone not still stinging from last week’s brutal beat down by the Spartans in East Lansing must have been on a coma this week. DGreenEvery fear fans had, other than turning the ball over, was experienced time and time again. We’ve known for several weeks that Michigan had issues on the interior of its offensive line and we all hoped that they would gel. Well the doors got blown off t hat one last week.

All is not lost however, Wolverine faithful. Nobody will argue against the fact that MSU has one of the very best, elite defenses in the nation. And also the toughest one Michigan has faced or will face, the duration of the season. What better to come to town after getting your ass kicked? A team that this year is softer than Kleenex. Who is also missing their best offensive player in QB Taylor Martinez and others on both sides of the ball. Nobody confused them with a tough team when they weren’t banged up all over the place, but even more so now.

Now that hopes of a B1G Championship game appearance are doused and on life support at best, it’s time to get other players some snaps. Shane Morris, Derrick Green, DeVeon Smith, Ben Braden, Taco Charlton, and several others need reps. All are talented, and many have as good or more potential than those starting in front of them. Fitz Toussaint has done some very good things for U of M, but few will stand up to say they don’t want others to get some snaps. Nows is the time to see what you’ve got, both for the last 4+ games of the season, and beyond.

We will find out whether Michigan has the fortitude to bounce back, and I think they will. In fact in a big way.

Michigan 44, Nebraska 21

2012 Game Preview – Nebraska

What to watch on offense

Like many defensive minded coaches Bo Pelini puts complete trust in his OC to manage most, if not all aspects of the offense. Pelini has allowed veteran OC Tim Beck to run the Nebraska offense as he sees fit. Beck has traditionally employed a pro-style offense, but with the ascension of Taylor Martinez to tTaylor Martinez - Bleacher Reporthe starting QB role, Beck has been forced to adjust. Elements of Beck’s pro-style offense still exist within Nebraska’s offensive attack but the spread option makes up a large portion of what Nebraska likes to do offensively. Nebraska runs a ton option plays, many from spread looks but also from under center and in the pistol.

Martinez is not a new commodity. Most who follow college football are aware of him and his skill-set. For much of the last two years Martinez has frustrated Nebraska’s fan base and coaching staff in the passing game. Poor footwork, mechanics, and decision making all led to a QB who was more a liability as a passer than an asset. Martinez put in a lot of work on his passing abilities in the offseason and that work has paid dividends this season. Martinez has the highest completion percentage of his career and a gaudy 14-4 TD to INT ratio. Kenny Bell leads a Nebraska WR core that has been largely unheralded this season. A former track star, Bell has the ability to get vertical and make explosive plays in the passing game.

Nebraska was expected to have one of the most potent rushing attacks in the country. Injuries to Rex Burkhead have impacted the Nebraska offense, but not close to the level that many expected when he went down. Ameer Abdullah, who posted just 172 yds on the ground a year ago, has filled in admirably for Burkhead but he doesn’t bring the same level of physicality, Abdullah is has more pop and wiggle. Burkhead is expected to miss Saturday’s game meaning the full load will fall to Abdullah.

Nebraska lost 3 starters off of the offensive line including 2nd team All-Big 10 Center Mike Caputo.

Best Offensive Player

QB Taylor Martinez- Burkhead would be the choice if he was healthy but he has be ruled out of Saturday’s game. Martinez is an electric running in the open field and a playmaker on the option. Improved passing ability has turned Martinez into a true duel threat this season.

Ohio Game Prediction

For years, I’ve struggled to sleep the night before "The Game". As far back as I can remember, I look forward to this day as much as a 6 year old runs down the stairs on Christmas morning with unparalleled anticipation. The century plus long tradition of these two football programs is legendary. It epitomizes what college football is all about, and while some of the luster has worn off since 2006, it’s still just about as special as it gets in all of sports.

For the first time in nearly a decade, Michigan is favored in the matchup, and is on quite a roll the past 2 weeks, with double digit wins on the road in Champaign, and a surprising blowout 28 point win against Nebraska in the Big House. The Buckeyes come in losers of two tight games in a row, an overtime loss at Purdue, and a 20-14 loss against Penn State in Columbus last week, and a 6-5 overall record. But nobody in Ann Arbor or Columbus needs a reminder how the last 7 matchups have gone. If there’s one thing that is certain in this rivalry, like most, records mean next to nothing. In fact, more times than not, I’ve seen the underdog prevail (see: John Cooper).

Nebraska Game Prediction

Taylor Martinez Quarterback Taylor Martinez #3 of the Nebraska Cornhuskers celebrates after scoring on an 80 yard touchdown run in the third quarter against the Washington Huskies on September 18, 2010 at Husky Stadium in Seattle, Washington. The Cornhuskers defeated the Huskies 56-21.

Meaningful games in November, something we’ve been missing around here for awhile.

Sure it would take an even more than typical Sparty meltdown for Michigan to find itself in Indy the first weekend in December; but a 10-2 record and perfect 8-0 home record for the first time in the 132 years of Michigan Football are on the table. Even the biggest Maize and Blue homers would have had a hard time fathoming that happening in August.

The second most famous Big 10 coach named Bo brings Big Red to Ann Arbor for the first time in nearly half a century. Like most of the Big 10, Nebraska has been Jekyll and Hyde this year. Dominant in a 24-3 drubbing of MSU, and seemingly pedestrian in a blow out loss to Wisconsin and a tight loss to an average Northwestern team. The two biggest keys in my mind will be maintaining gap responsibility on defense against a formidable option attack, and red zone conversions on offense.
