Rich Rodriguez on Gibbons: “Obviously, kicker was a need position. … a very strong foot. He one the Lou Groza Award for most outstanding high school kicker.”
Gibbons on the workouts: "The workouts are real hard, I’ve just got to get used to it," said Gibbons, a 6-foot, 200-pounder from West Palm Beach (Fla.) Cardinal Newman. "I never worked out like this before."
On Mike Barwis: “Strength coach Mike Barwis is well known for making a strong impression on freshmen, especially specialists, who often have less previous strength training than position players. "Definitely, he turns everybody around," said Gibbons, whose workouts at home would consist of kicking 50 balls per day. "Just work hard and don’t give up because if you give up, Barwis goes crazy," Gibbons recalled (Zoltan) Mesko telling him.”
On possibly redshirting: "They threw me into the fire right away," Gibbons said. "I’m into the competition right now, I’m competing, and it’s anybody’s job right now. I hope I get the job and don’t have to redshirt."
Scouts, Inc.: “Gibbons is a very consistent place kicker. He gets into his field goals quickly and has smooth tempo. Powerful leg and has kicked several field goals over 40 yards including a 52 yarder. Kickoffs average about 5 yards deep with good hang of about 4.0 seconds. Footwork isn’t quite as fluid as field goals. Punting is above average and is solid under the rush. His drop, leg extension, and steps need worked on as a punter; but is a very good place kicker and kickoff man.”
