Heitzman finished his high school career with a loss in the semi-finals of this years OHSAA football playoff. In 2009 however, his Wildcats defeated Ohio power Cleveland Glenville 16-15. As a junior Heitzman accounted for 13 sacks as a defensive end. And in 2010 he registered 21 tackles for loss and was named first team all state and district player of the year. Heitzman had verballed to play for Vanderbilt, but changed his mind after a coaching change there.

Sean O’Connell UMGoBlog: "Heitzman has a tremendous motor and uses his hands very well to shed would be blockers. He is a very good tackler and has a nose for the ball. He’ll more than likely need a redshirt year to work on his quickness and strength. He will probably end up at defensive end, but could possibly play tight end."

Scouts Inc., “Heitzman possesses solid size for a high school defensive end and should be able to add more good bulk as he physically develops and gets into a college weight program … As a pass rusher he displays the ability to get into the blocker with some leverage and create pressure with a bull rush. Needs to be more active with his weapons, develop his pass rush arsenal, and not attack the whole man. Heitzman is a solid defender who will flash some tools to be tough versus the run and pass.”
