2013 Recruiting: So What’s Next?

I love football recruiting. National Letter of Intent Day is one of my favorite days of the year, but it can be somewhat boring if your school isn’t in the running for many prospects. For Michigan, Commitmas Day came a little late, or a little early depending on how you look at it. I for one will never forget 2/18/2012. A day when my beloved Wolverines received verbal commitments from six four star prospects in a matter of 12ish hours.

For Michigan, Commitmas Day came a little late, or a little early depending on how you look at it. I for one will never forget 2/18/2012. A day when my beloved Wolverines received verbal commitments from six four star prospects in a matter of 12ish hours. Kyle Bosch (4 star OG/OT), Wyatt Shallman (4 star athlete), David Dawson (3/4 star OG/OC), Jourdan Lewis (3/4 star CB), Chris Fox (4 star OT) and Taco Charlton (4 star LB/DE) all pledged for UM on the same day that the Wolves beat OSU in hoops. Oh yeah, the next day Jake Butt (4 star TE) and Logan Tuley-Tillman (4 star OT) also dropped. Then there was a two day drought until the tall and lanky Jaron Dukes (probable 3 star) committed, followed by a lengthy 3 day hiatus when 4 star OL Patrick Kugler decided to sign up. Those nine verbals brought Michigan’s total commits for the 2013 class up to 13. With 9ish spots left where will the staff decide to go with the rest?

Quarterback  (DONE)

Commits: Shane Morris

Prospects: With 5 star Shane Morris already in the fold it will be pretty hard to lure in another quarterback anyways, so Michigan is likely done here. There have been rumbling of Riley Ferguson possibly visiting Michigan this spring, but the odds of him signing with the Maize and Blue are next to zero. Henry Poggi’s teammate Shane Cockerille could be a possibility, but there is some speculation of whether or not his offer is committable, if he even has one at all.

Michigan Football Recruiting Update (5/6/2011)

WOW! Since the last recruiting update two weeks ago Michigan has received an impressive four verbal commitments. Tight endsA.J. Williams Devin Funchess and A.J. Williams as well as linebackers Joe Bolden and James “Biggs” Ross all joined the fold. Funchess is a kid with a ton of upside and is athletic enough to play some receiver as well. A.J. Williams is a monster tight end who could potentially end up on the o-line at some point. Joe Bolden said that he could commit at any time and he did just that. He and his family drove up to A2 and did it in person. On the other hand, James Ross was quite the surprise. He was going to take some time, but needed to secure his spot as a Wolverine ASAP. Linebacker now looks to be full and the question is does Michigan take tight end Ron Thompson if he wants on board too? Probably.

New Offers

Nelson Agholor – four star athlete out of the Sunshine State.

Ken Ekanem – four star Virginia defensive end.

D.J. Foster – exceptional athlete from Arizona.

Hiva Lutui – four star OG out of Texas.

Tyriq McCord – nice looking defensive end out of Florida.

Durron Neal – the best receiver in Missouri not named Dorial Green-Beckham.

Michigan Football Recruiting Update (4/21/2011)

It was a pretty busy in the recruiting world this past week. Michigan picked up it’s second linebacker commit in as many days on Saturday when Royce Jenkins-Stone gave his verbal pledge to Coach Hoke and crew. Michigan was thought to be the long time leader for Royce, but it was a bit of a surprise that he made his choice earlier that we all thought. Stone just made a nice leap in the Scout.com rankings, earning the tag of the #2 MLB in the class of 2012. RJS and Kaleb Ringer should be an outstanding duo of linebackers for years to come. Ringer made his official announcement last Friday. Now the question is who is the next linebacker to jump on board, and does the other get left out in the cold?

New Offers

Ken Ekanem – four star Virginia defensive end.

Dominic Ramacher – a three star athlete out of Texas who could play tight end, fullback or linebacker.

Anthony Standifer – Michigan was the first Big Ten school to offer the Illinois sleeper and he plans on visiting at some point in the near future.

Halo List

Ronald Darby – (Notre Dame)

Zeke Pike – as expected, Zeke committed to Auburn yesterday afternoon. Now Michigan has a decision to make about the quarterback position. I’ll have a post about this later.

Spring Game Visitors (* denotes offer)

Ben BradenMICHIGAN COMMIT!

Sheldon Day* – was either going to visit Michigan or Notre Dame and opted to come up to AA. He brought along some members of his family and they all enjoyed it. Michigan looks very good for Day.

Jordan Diamond* – had another nice visit. This one probably goes until after the season, but Michigan still has the lead here.

J.J. Denman* – beast. Loved his visit. He said he’d be back for an official and has not decided when he’ll make his choice yet.

Devin Funchess *- made it in to AA once again, and IMO we lead for him.

Royce Jenkins-Stone *- MICHIGAN COMMIT!

Mario Ojemudia*made another trip to Michigan and the Wolverines have really shot up his board. Mario lists Michigan, MSU and Stanford as his favorites. It looks like a UM – MSU battle.

Terry Richardson* – I’m not really sure what to say about Terry. He seems like he wants to leave the state. But I also believe that he is down on the big board of corners. We’ll see.

James Ross* – I discussed the linebacker situation a little bit last week and it’s getting dicey. Is the next LB to commit the last taken in this class? Ross will not be choosing any time soon.

Caleb Stacey* – MICHIGAN COMMIT!

Other Recruiting News

Michigan has apparently also received a silent commit recently. Most think that it is either Joe Bolden* or Matt Godin*. We should know in a few weeks.

Michigan leads for Pharaoh Brown* ($).

Michigan Football Recruiting Update (4/8/11)

Scout.com recently released its top 300 prospects list for the 2012 class. Below is a list of kids who have expressed interest in Michigan and where we stand.

QUARTERBACKS

Gunner Kiel (#1 QB, #17 overall) – has an offer. ND lean? Not sure about his interest level in Michigan, but if Maty Mauk were to commit to ND first that could open things up.

Zeke Pike (#3 , #25) – has visited. Michigan is high on his list.

Maty Mauk (#5, #116) – has visited. Another ND lean? If not, Michigan is right up there.

Bennie Coney (#22, NR) – Coney just missed the top 300 and is a offer from RR and crew. There was still some interest a while back, but I would imagine he is further down the big board of QB’s.

RUNNING BACKS

Keith Marshall (#1 RB, #5 overall) – A kid everybody wants. Recently narrowed his list to around 12 schools, with Michigan being one of them.

Bri’onte Dunn (#4, #28) – an OSU verbal, but will visit Michigan at some point.

Wes Brown (#6, #44) – will be visiting for the spring game with Good Counsel teammates.

Greg Garmon (#11, #65) – could play other positions at 6’2", but most schools want him at RB. There is Michigan interest, but has stated he would like to play in the south.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Dorial Green-Beckham (#1 WR, #2 overall) – Dorial is an absolute freak of nature and will be a very tough get. The only reason I put him in here is because he and Zeke Pike have been talking. I can dream right??

Stefon Diggs (#2 S, #16 ) – Scout projects Diggs as a safety, but most schools want him at wide out. He will be visiting for the spring game.

Aaron Burbridge (#11, #84) – most think he is a Sparty lean, but you never know.

Dwayne Stanford (#16, #106) – grew up watching Michigan and seems pretty open.

Malik Gilmore (#40, #259) – seems to be intrigued by Michigan and Notre Dame and is open.
