Recruiting Update (1/20)

Hello all. I just wanted to give a quick update on recruiting. It’s been rather crazy since late last week in the Michigan recruiting world. First off, I want to welcome all of the new coaches to the program and wish them well. Recruiting got a huge boost last evening when Coach Brady Hoke named Greg Mattison the new defensive coordinator. He is not only one of the best defensive coaches in all of football, he is the ultimate closer in the recruiting world. I look for defensive recruiting to pick up soon, but especially next season.

On to recruiting. There has been a bunch of bad news over the past couple of weeks, in the form of de-commitments. Dallas Crawford, Matt Goudis and Antonio Kinard (was he ever a true commit?) all decided to commit to Miami. Meanwhile Jake Fisher, Kellen Jones, Brennen Beyer, Jack Miller, Blake Countess and Tony Posada are either contemplating or taking more visits. All but Fisher seem likely to be Blue at this point, but Coach Hoke still has work to do. The Wolverines are also looking pretty good for Chris Bryant and Hakeem Flowers, so the news is getting much better.

Coach wasted little time getting some new offers out there, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Cornerbacks Stefan McClure (Army All-American) and Floyd Raven will both be visiting Ann Arbor over the coming few weekends.

With Michigan lacking in the kicking game, Hoke recently offered Californian Matt Wile. It is still unsure at this point if Michigan is looking to snag a last minute quarterback, but a few names to remember are Max Shortell (rumors are he has an offer), Tanner McAvoy and Christian Suntrup. Two more kids to keep an eye on: OT Patrick Flavin and CB Darren Kitchen is still in the mix. I’m sure we will learn of more offers in the coming days before LOI day is here. We will also have a few profiles up in the next couple of days.

Look for the upcoming weekends to be big visiting weekends. So far this weekend UM has Frank Clark, Stefan McClure, Tony Posada, Raymon Taylor and Matt Wile coming in to visit. And Floyd Raven will be coming in on the weekend of the 28th. I expect the 28th list to grow as well.

Finally a few prospects to add to the Halo List from the past few weeks. Kris Frost, ugh. Michigan was his clear leader for a long time until the coaching change. Then he decided on Auburn, who decided to take his commitment over a week later. A day after I posted Devin Lucien’s profile, he of course drops Michigan because they wanted him as a defensive back. He is not a d-back, so we’re out. Jack Tabb picked UNC and Deion Barnes is picking either PSU or Georgia.

Michigan picked up a commitment from Blake Countess, helping out the slim depth in the secondary. Michigan also reportedly leads forMatt Goudis Matthews, NC OLB Kris Frost. Both four star players help this class immediately, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The kicking game got a boost when kicker Matt Goudis flipped his commitment from Boise State to Michigan.

Michigan hopes to land Kris Frost and Anthony Zettel. The staff also hopes they can get Thomas Rawls who is close to qualifying. It has been reported that both Hakeem Flowers and Chris Bryant are heavy Michigan leans while they remain hopeful that at least one defensive tackle sings with them. Watch out for Farrell, PA DT Rob Trudo, who currently his committed to Syracuse. Another player to keep an eye on is Prince Holloway, a slot wide receiver from Cape Coral who is close to committing. It is unknown whether Holloway is qualified and has a committable offer from the staff. With that said Holloway is a great talent who fits the slot receiver position as well as anyone.

2011/2012 Defensive Recruiting Update

2011 & 2012 Michigan Defensive Recruiting Update

Michigan lost out on Avery Walls this week however gained a commitment from three star linebacker Desmond Morgan. Obviously defense isBrennen Beyer - Scout.com where this staff needs to focus their recruiting attention towards. Eight of Michigan’s current commitments (of 13 total) come on the defensive side of the ball. Led by four star defensive end Brennen Beyer and four star linebacker Kellen Jones, this class still has much room for improvement.

On the defensive front Michigan has a commitment from Canton, MI defensive end Brennen Beyer. Beyer is a versatile player who can play both OLB and DE. If Beyer can put on some more weight he could be a Craig Roh type of player. Michigan also has a commitment from Columbus, Ohio’s Chris Rock. Rock has a nice 6’5” 240 pound frame but has lacked production in the high school level. Rock is a player who can gain some weight and play inside at defensive tackle. Anthony Zettle, who is a highly rated offensive guard who prefers defense, has Michigan in his top two. With two defensive ends already in the fold and another who holds Michigan high on his list, Michigan must find some solid players to contribute inside. Look for Michigan to try to land Hyattsville, MD Darian Cooper and Covington, LA Mickey Johnson. Another defensive tackle to watch for is Farrell, PA Rob Trudo. Trudo is currently committed to Syracuse but has enjoyed the interest Michigan has shown him over the last month.

Projection at the DL position – Brennen Beyer (DE), Anthony Zettel (DE), Chris Rock (DL), Rob Trudo (DT)

Michigan also needs help at the linebacker position. Commits Kellen Jones and Desmond Morgan provide that however another one or two players would be great. Jones is physically ready to play at the next level while Morgan has great instincts but could benefit from some speed and agility training. Michigan also has Antonio Kinard, a 2011 kid who went to prep school, in the mix. However it is unknown whether Michigan would take him or not. Kris Frost, out of Matthews, NC, would be a great fit for what this staff likes to do on defense. It’ll be hard to keep him from Auburn but it is still a possibility. More likely is Michigan offering Winter Springs, FL OLB Ryan Petro. Petro has a great 6’3” 205 pound frame and is an absolute freak of nature. He does it all for Winter Springs. He has great speed and plays great sideline to sideline. He is certainly a sleeper in the 2011 class.

Projection at the LB position – Kellen Jones (MLB), Desmond Morgan (MLB), Ryan Petro (OLB), Antonio Kinard (OLB)

Recruiting the safety position has been very frustrating for this staff. Well, recruiting the entire secondary for that matter. Either way, Dallas Crawford - Naple NewsMichigan would like to take one or maybe two safeties in this class. Although listed as a cornerback by most of the recruiting services, Dallas Crawford fills this need perfectly. He has some of the best instincts of any player in 2011 class and reads the field as well as anyone. Where he lacks in size (5’10” 180) he makes for by being very physical. Crawford has been a leader as a four year starter at South Fort Myers. With limited options, Michigan has pursued Dillard Fort Lauderdale safety Wayne Lyons. Also, look for Michigan to go after Orlando Dr. Phillips’ now-uncommitted safety Roderick Ryles. Also, Greg Brown (listed below) may have outgrown the CB position into a strong safety type of player.

Projection at the S position – Dallas Crawford, **too early to put Ryles here**

Michigan has commitments from two corners already. Greg Brown (Fremont, OH) and Delonte Hollowell (Detroit, MI) are both solid players. Brown is starting to outgrown the cornerback position however Hollowell is a very quick but small player. Hollowell could benefit from strength and conditioning but he may be asked to play as a freshmen. Olney, MD product Blake Countess holds Michigan high on his list and he could end up wearing maize and blue. Also, look for the staff to continue to recruit Central, LA corner James Richardson in the event that the staff does think Brown outgrew the cornerback position.

Projection at the CB position – Delonte Hollowell, Greg Brown, Blake Countess

Projected 2011 Defensive Class:

DE – Brennen Beyer – ratingratingratingrating – Canton, MI
DE – Chris Rock – ratingratingrating – Columbus, OH
DE – Anthony Zettel – ratingratingratingrating – West Branch, MI
DT – Rob Trudo – ratingratingrating – Farrell, PA
